Research activity includes fabrication of optically active materials (glasses, crystals, ceramics, powders) doped with rare earth and transition metal ions and their spectroscopy characterization. In particular by means of sol-gel technology there are produced monolithic and porous silica and titania glasses, nanocrystalline powders, nanoceramics and thin films.

Among different nanocrystalline phosphors produced in our laboratories there are rare earth doped metal oxides, garnets and perovskites (La2O3, Y2O3, Lu2O3, YAlO3, Y3Al5O12, BaTiO3, (Ba,Sc)TiO3, K2Gd(WO4)2, MgAl2O4, CaAl2O4, BaAl2O4, ZnAl2O4, SrAl2O4, In2O3, SnO2, ITO (In2O3:SnO2), TiO2, SrMnO3-d, La1-xSrxMnO3-d, SrCoO3-d, La1-xSrxCoO3-d, Gd1-xLnxBaCo2O5+d), hydroxyapatites (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, Ln:Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, Ag:Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2), phosphates (LiLa1-xLnx(PO3)4), nitrides (GaN, RE3+:GaN), fluorides (NaYF4, KYF4), metallic particles MP (Ag0, Au0, Cu0, Rh0, Pd0), ferromagnetic particles FMP (Fe2O3), spherical silica particles SSP (SiO2 60 nm -800 nm, Ag:SiO2, Au:SiO2), polymers and composites (Polythiohene (PTh), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), polyindole, composites: Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) Poly(2-hydrxyethyl methacrylate) (HEPA), Polivinylacetate + nanocrystallites), quantum dots (CdSe) and nanoceramics (YAG, RE3+:YAG, BaTiO3, GaN, MgAl2O4, Al2O3). There are produced also core-shell structures (SiO2:Fe2O3: Ag, SiO2:Fe2O3:Eu3+:Lu2O3) based on sol-gel porous silica spheres incrusted silver nanocrystals and nanoluminophors which find application as medical agents (sensors for diagnostic, transporting particles for target pharmacotherapy).

The spectroscopy (IR, Raman, absorption, luminescence) properties of fabricated nanomaterials are studied in a broad temperature range 4- 300K. Beyond this the electric and magnetic studies of nanoceramics in view of multiferroic properties (Re:BaTiO3 and Re:GaN, (Re,Sr) MnO3, (Re,Sr) CoO3 ) are extensively investigated.
